We are warm, tucked close to fire, cups of coffee, cut pineapple, with vibrant birthday flowers standing tall above my head at my kitchen counter perch, Tyler in the air. Soon there will be waffles and fruit, bright bowls and brief hellos at this wooden house down by the bay.
I have mentioned before that my Momcat and Jake’s Madre share a birthday, so January– clear and stark– has built in a warm week of celebration that settles somewhere in its knees.
The ice roads and spare forests that lead us to these places– with their churning woodstoves and cups of wine or coffee, with city windows or wooden ones, with cats who stare (with one eye or two) and dogs who spin, with friends who gather for sad occasions or glad ones– shine brightly in the mornings, glow dimly around our headlights’ edges at night. Above, the stars and sun scatter.
We are lucky to be in such company. Happy birthday to you both.
And, thanks to Suzanne, we now know that January 22nd is also Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day!
How very appropriate. Suzanne asks, “What questions does Olive have for you? As her cat Mom, be prepared to answer the tough ones.”
I can only mother in the grand traditions of the grand mothers I have had the great fortune to know.
